Lots of cedar, tea-leaf and hazelnut character and ripe fruit aromas. Citrus peel, too. Full body, round and juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Smoky undertone. This is structured and so complex. Drink in 2023. (Suckling)

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

Decanter

The large scale here is undeniable, yet there is fine harmony and opulence. A well- structured blend of 95% Merlot, with 5% Cabernet Franc, showing vivid aspects of juicy dark cherry and damson. The density is impressive, as is the length. Excellent value for the price. Drinking Window 2021 - 2050.

A straight up smokin’ red from this vintage is the 2015 Château Gazin and it’s a big, powerful, stacked 2015 that’s for those with patience. Made from almost all Merlot (I think it’s 100%), my notes on this beauty start - and end - with “love it.” Cassis, lead pencil shavings, graphite, forest floor, and tons of minerality all soar from the glass of this sensationally rich, concentrated, medium to full-bodied 2015 that has building tannin, a seamless texture, and a blockbuster finish. Forget bottle for 5-7 years and enjoy over the following two to three decades.

The Wine Independent

The 2015 Gazin is a blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc and has a medium to deep garnet color. It features high-toned notes of Morello cherries and redcurrant jelly before delivering a core of baked plums, unsmoked cigars, and wild sage with a touch of aniseed. Full-bodied, the palate is firm and chewy with a lively backbone supporting the generous fruit, finishing with great length.

Wine Advocate

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Gazin is scented of baked plums, Christmas cake, mincemeat and plum preserves with hints of chocolate box, coffee, tapenade and smoked meats. Medium to full-bodied with mouth-filling baked berries and savory layers, it has firm, chewy tannins and a long finish.

Wine Spectator

Plush and warm, with fig, boysenberry and blackberry confiture notes inlaid with light charcoal, black tea and fruitcake hints. The fleshy finish lets the charcoal element lead the way. Best from 2022 through 2032. 6,833 cases made.

Vinous Media

The 2015 Gazin has a fragrant bouquet of blackberry, briary and truffle; a whiff of bonfire smoke emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, quite edgy and tensile with a fresh, graphite and tobacco-laced finish that is classic in style. Superb, if missing the same horsepower of 12 months ago. This might well be closing down. Tasted blind at the Southwold 2015 Bordeaux tasting.
