This shows more brooding violet extract and dark fruit on the nose, which delivers abundance, depth and more primary fruit with higher ripeness. Expect mulberries and dark currants with some dark licorice as well as a hint of dried spices and dried fruit. On the palate, this is still pretty full-bodied, with lots of dusty tannins and a fresh olive character at the end. Still structured and tense, with a long finish. A modern Bordeaux that’s well-charged with dense ripe fruit and quality tannins. Best from 2025. A blend of 55% cabernet sauvignon, 39% merlot and 6% petit verdot. Drink or hold. Tasted in a vertical of 10 vintages.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). Very expressive, with violet and lilac notes followed by creamed plum and mulled blackberry and black currant fruit flavors. Subtle anise, juniper and sanguine notes thread the very long finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2024 through 2036.

The 2018 Giscours has a very Burgundian bouquet with pure red cherries, cassis and violet scents, well defined and less ostentatious than some of its peers. The palate is quite voluminous and powerful, with thickly layered black fruit, black pepper and mint. It's missing the grace of the '16 but has impressive length. This will be fascinating to observe as it matures in bottle.

Brushed damson, fine but firm tannins, lots of dark deep fruits and powerful oak that slightly detracts from appellation typicity. This is confident and good-quality but needs a lot of time in bottle. Drinking Window 2026 - 2042.

Lots of ripe black cherry and cassis fruits as well as graphite, lead pencil, and scorched earth notes emerge from the 2018 Château Giscours, a medium-bodied Margaux that has a fresh, focused texture, plenty of underlying structure, and the purity of fruit that's the hallmark of the vintage. This beautiful Margaux builds nicely with time in the glass, and while it plays in the more elegant side of the spectrum, it has terrific mid-palate depth, stunning balance, and outstanding length. I think the 2019 might ultimately surpass it, but it's certainly in the same ballpark as the 2016. Give bottles 3-5 years and enjoy over the following 20 years or more.

The 2018 Giscours has a deep garnet purple color. It offers open-knit notes of prunes and fruit cake, plus hints of Indian spices, incense, and camphor, with a touch of dusty soil. Full-bodied, the palate is rich and spicy, with chewy tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a peppery kick.
