The 2017 Gloria is just as delicious from bottle as it was from barrel. A rush of bright red cherry and plum fruit, blood orange, iron, dried flowers and mint gives the 2017 its sense of energy. Medium in body and full of character, Gloria is one of the highlights of the vintage. Don’t miss it. Tasted two times.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Dark and winey in profile, with steeped plum, blackberry and black currant fruit that is youthfully coiled up, laced with bramble, apple wood and anise notes. A touch of toasted spice to the minty cassis, berries and plums. Juicy on the medium-bodied palate with lightly chewy tannins. A little more fluid in the middle this year, but there is still good balance. Medium-long finish. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 26% merlot, 8% petit verdot and 5% cabernet franc. Drink now. Tight but plentiful fruit extraction. The expression is a little less full than in 2016, but there is both finesse and grip to the fine, firmly held tannins as they travel through the palate, accompanying cassis, fern, rosemary, heather and cigar box notes. This estate continues to make a powerful, ripe style of wine, and their 2017 Chateau Gloria offers plenty of oak as well as terrific cassis fruits, hints of violets, and flowery incense, medium to full body, and a layered, pure, beautifully balanced style. While I wasn’t able to get a release price, I’m sure this is going to represent a smoking value! Based on 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 8% Petit Verdot, and the rest Cabernet Franc, aged in 40% new barrels, representing just 65% of the total production, it will evolve gracefully for two decades or more.

The 2017 Gloria has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It springs out of the glass with notes of warm redcurrants, blackcurrant pastilles, and tar, plus hints of chargrill and bay leaves. Medium-bodied, the palate is soft and savory with bags of black and red berry flavors and a mineral-laced finish.

Winery Notes

Dense ruby/purple in color, it has sweet, juicy, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, no real evidence of any oak, but a fleshy, open-knit, meaty mouth feel. Excellent purity, low acidity and ripe tannin all characterize this beautiful wine, which should drink well for 12-15 years. Another major sleeper of the vintage.
