At this stage, the wine shows some herbal freshness, with a savory, leafy overtone to the red berry fruit and plums. On the palate, this is medium-bodied, with a slightly more fluid middle and soft-grained tannins. Bright and juicy finish. A vintage to approach sooner. 61% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot, 6% cabernet franc and 14% petit verdot. Drink from 2026 to the next six years. From a vertical tasting at the winery.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

90-92 Charming and extroverted, the 2021 Gloria bursts with aromas of cassis, cherries, sweet berries, fresh mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's a lively, seamless wine that wears its heart on its sleeve. This blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, 14% Petit Verdot and 6% Cabernet Franc seems likely to emerge as a sleeper of the vintage.

90-92 The 2021 Gloria is charming, as it so often is. Bright and energetic, the 2019 has so much to offer. The purity of the red-toned fruit is so appealing. Gloria can show some hard edges when it is young, but the 2021 is very nicely balanced for a young Saint-Julien.

90-92 The 2021 Château Gloria offers up medium-bodied aromas and flavors and darker, almost cassis-like fruits as well as leather, toasted spice, and background oak. A blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has good concentration, the vintage's pretty, elegant, balanced style, ripe tannins, and a great finish.

A darkly herbal nose, blackcurrant and brambles. Juicy and alive on the palate, this is quite high-toned with a sharpness to the fruit yet also a pencil lead-chalkiness giving this push pull of brightness as well as a savoury touch. I like the clarity of flavours, the precision that comes across - it's playful and fun and all seems in balance with the minerality showing through on the palate too. A little light on the mid palate, but easy to like.

Winery Notes

Dense ruby/purple in color, it has sweet, juicy, blackcurrant and black cherry fruit, no real evidence of any oak, but a fleshy, open-knit, meaty mouth feel. Excellent purity, low acidity and ripe tannin all characterize this beautiful wine, which should drink well for 12-15 years. Another major sleeper of the vintage.
