Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Grand Mayne features fragrant kirsch, redcurrant jelly and black plums scents with touches of garrigue, mossy bark and Sichuan pepper. Full-bodied, rich and densely laden with vibrant red and black fruits, it has a plush frame and very long, earth-laced finish.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2016 Grand Mayne gives very little away on the nose, taciturn, broody dark berry fruit mixed with black tea and cedar aromas. More Left Bank in style. The palate is medium-bodied with a savoury, dried-blood-tinged entry. Fine depth, fully mature yet fresh, applying satisfying grip towards the cracked black pepper-tinged finish. Maybe give it another year. Classy. Tasted blind at the Southwold 10-Year-On tasting.

91-93 Barrel Sample. This is a rich and balanced wine. It has generous tannins and ripe black fruits, nothing in excess. Spice and fine acidity in the aftertaste show the wine has a good medium-term future.

The 2016 Château Grand Mayne is a beauty and could turn into a real superstar with 3-4 years of bottle age. This deep ruby-colored effort gives up lots of currant and cassis fruits as well as subtle new oak in its violet and mineral-driven aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, with fine tannins and impeccable balance, it’s seriously impressive. Give it a few years and it should keep for two decades or more.

The Wine Independent

Deep garnet in color, the 2016 Grand Mayne leaps with vibrant notions of black and red cherries, ripe juicy plums, and boysenberries, plus suggestions of tilled soil, bay leaves, and cast-iron pan. The full-bodied palate is decadently rich with balancing freshness, and ripe, rounded tannins leading to a lifted red berry finish.

91-92 Solid density of fruit and velvety tannins to this one. Medium to full body, chewy tannins and a fresh finish.

Decanter

Smoky sweet spice with juicy, ripe red berries on the nose. The core of liquorice and star anise is supported by plump, fleshy vibrant loganberry and raspberry fruit. Fresh, chewy fig on the finish. Youthful and classy.

WS 90pts

Wine Spectator

A restrained style, with gently mulled plum, raspberry and black cherry fruit flavors that pick up well-detailed black tea and incense accents on the finish. A light mineral edge pierces and lifts the finish a bit, adding length. Best from 2021 through 2030.

Winery Notes

A wine must reflect its terroir, its origins. We strongly believe that the uniqueness of the vineyard’s location is fundamental in the conception of a great wine. There can never be a great wine without a great vineyard." Jean-Antoine & Damien NONY In this respect, the wines of Château Grand Mayne are completely expressive of their place of origin. They are proud representatives of the best terroirs of the western hillside and foot of St. Émilion, composed of clay and limestone. A subtle blend of merlot and cabernet franc, the wines of Grand Mayne combine the power of fruit, elegant tension and finesse. Known for their excellent ageing potential, the recent vintages of Château Grand Mayne are now more open and accessible in their early years.
