A fresh and transparent wine with blackberry and orange peel aromas. Medium-bodied with very fine tannins and a long, racy finish. Crunchy too. All in balance. Made by Guilliame Thienpont of Vieux Chateau Certan. 83% merlot and 17% cabernet franc. Drinkable already, but will age beautifully.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2023 Guillot-Clauzel is just as beautiful as it was en primeur. In recent years, Guillaume Thienpont has done a terrific job in exalting the fruit here while also dialing back extractions and oak. Those changes yield a very friendly, open-knit Pomerol that is incredibly charming. Hints of blue-toned fruit, lavender and spice resonate on the close.

A blend of 83% Merlot and 17% Cabernet Franc from a parcel just beside Le Pin with more gravelly soils on top of limestone, the 2023 Château Guillot-Clauzel was aged 18 months in 30% new oak. Its deep ruby hue is followed by a beautiful perfume of ripe black cherries, plums, gravelly earth, and violets. It's ripe, medium to full-bodied, round, and expressive on the palate, with a ripe, sexy, opulent style in the vintage. It's undeniably delicious and has another 20 years of prime drinking. There are 500 cases produced. Drink 2026-2045.
