Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Margaux

The Margaux appellation of France's legendary Bordeaux wine region is one of the world's most famous and highly respected viticultural areas. For centuries, Margaux has been deeply associated with extremely fine wines of the highest quality, made using traditional and time-honored techniques in order to extract the very best, most refined and elegant flavors and aromas from the Bordeaux varietal grapes which grow there. Margaux wines are almost always blended, using two or three key Bordeaux grapes, commonly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc (amongst others). The blending techniques and quantities have been passed down through the generations in the ancestral chateaus which make up the region, and quality and prestige has never been allowed to falter, making Margaux one of the undisputed jewels in France's already glittering crown.

The 2023 Kirwan turned out beautifully. Aromatic and poised, this mid-weight Margaux has a ton to offer. Crushed flowers, vibrant red-toned fruit, blood orange, cedar, mint and licorice are beautifully lifted. The 2023 is so classy and refined.

Ripe and juicy, this is lovely: soft, friendly, calm and relaxed. There’s a real purity to this, with great fine tannins, cool red berry fruit and freshness all the way. Definitely more straight than plump, but it’s really welcoming and easy to approach now, just well constructed and allowing the vintage to speak. Juicy and fun, nothing extreme, just well constructed and allowing the vintage to speak.

A classic, beautifully balanced wine, the 2023 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse checks in as 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 44% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, all brought up in a mix of new and used barrels. Its deep purple hue is followed by classy and classic Pauillac darker currant fruits intermixed with notes of smoky tobacco, freshly sharpened pencils, and spicy wood. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has the vintage's charming, rounded, yet nicely concentrated mouthfeel and outstanding length. It has some charm even today yet will probably hit its early drinking window in 5-7 years and keep for 30 years or more if well stored. Drink 2031-2055.

This is ripe and fresh, with a laid-back feel, as the silky structure lets gently mulled plum and black cherry fruit splay out slowly, unveiling violet and ink notes through the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2035. 10,000 cases made, 2,000 cases imported.

90-91 2023 Kirwan has a fruity and cherry like character both on the nose and in the taste. This medium bodied wine is fresh and precise with an aftertaste of cassis, blackberries and hints of wood ending in a rather dry way. It is Kirwan that could be enjoyed early on.
