Fine wood spices, chocolate, paprika, plums and ripe, glossy berries on the nose. Ripe and dusty tannins caress the palate, giving a powdery mouthfeel. Integrated and long in the finish. From organically grown grapes. Hedonistic and already enjoyable, but can hold.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Cassis, ripe black cherries, graphite, spicy wood, and a kiss of violets all emerge from the 2022 Château La Marzelle, a pure, fruit-driven, balanced 2022 that has solid mid-palate depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's not the most complex Saint-Emilion out there, yet this is impeccably made and should benefit from 2-4 years in the cellar, with up to two decades of overall longevity. It might be the best vintage I've tasted from this château. The blend is 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged 16 months in a mix of new barrels and amphora.

Warmed black currant and boysenberry compote notes are inviting, if a touch heady, while extra fig and licorice root details add a chewy, grippy edge. Singed cedar and chestnut leaf accents ripple through on the finish, along with a swath of warm earth. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2028 through 2042. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

The 2022 La Marzelle is a sumptuous Saint-Émilion. Soft, silky contours give La Marzelle its considerable immediacy and charm. Plum, blood orange, mocha, new leather, mint and macerated red cherry flesh out in the glass. This is beautifully done.
