Pure and clear aromas of green melon, apple, flint and stone follow through to a full body with extremely attractive fruit, with vivid and energetic acidity at the end. Lime and pineapple, but subdued and very pretty. 55% sauvignon and 45% semillon. Drinkable but in four or five years it will be even better.

White Bordeaux

France is widely known as being the home of many of the world's finest white wines, and within France, the name which rings out across the wine world and is always associated with excellence of quality and flavor is Bordeaux. The white wines of the magnificent Bordeaux region are typically blended, and rely on the winemaker's skill and expertise to achieve the fine balance between the primary grape varietals used. Most blended white Bordeaux wines are made up of Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon and Muscadelle varietals, although there are actually nine grapes officially allowed by French wine law for the inclusion in Bordeaux white wines. The other six are Sauvignon Gris, Merlot Blanc, Ugni Blanc, Colombard, Ondenc and Mauzac, although the use of these other grapes has been in steady decline over the past century.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Vinous Media

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc has a complex and engaging bouquet with Granny Smiths and Conference pear, wet limestone, a subtle petrichor scent that I did not notice from barrel. The palate is very well balanced with admirable weight and just a tad more acidic "bite" compared to its showing en primeur. Hints of lemongrass add more spiciness and vivacity towards the finish that feels persistent in the mouth. This is very impressive and I can foresee a long future ahead. Dare I say that this has passed Haut-Brion Blanc in its slipstream during its élevage? Indeed, I do.

The 2020 Château La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc from this reference point estate is a fresher, vibrant white displaying a complex, intense style in its crushed citrus, orange pith, white flowers, and green nut-like nuances. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has racy acidity, good mid-palate concentration, and flawless balance. I don't think it has the extra "je ne sais quoi" character and dimensions found in the Haut-Brion Blanc, but this is nevertheless a brilliant Pessac Blanc that will evolve for two to three decades.

The Wine Independent

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc, a blend of 54.7% Sauvignon Blanc and 45.3% Semillon, slowly emerges from the glass with notes of Golden Delicious apple, juicy pears, and coriander seed, followed by underlying hints of paraffin wax, wet pebbles, and white pepper. The medium-bodied palate is elegantly styled, with a lively backbone and energetic apple and pear layers, finishing long with a spicy lift.

Decanter

Fragrant white flowers, touches of lime blossom and slate-filled citrus. The acidity is fresh, but this is more about texture, and it is extremely successful. Harvest from 19th to 28th August. The minerality, together with freshly cut rosemary and sage notes, is accentuated as it opens, which is an excellent indicator of how well this wine will age. Deft winemaking, as ever, proving why this is one of Bordeaux's best loved white wines. Tasted twice.

Wine Advocate

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion Blanc opens in the glass with aromas of citrus oil, lemongrass, crisp stone fruits and wet stones framed by a touch of youthful reduction. Medium to full-bodied, layered and racy, with chalky structure and a mouthwatering finish, it was bottled under Diam 30.
