Surpassing the expectations formed at the en primeur stage, the 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion unfurls in the glass with aromas of cassis, dark berries, spices, licorice, burning embers and pencil shavings. Medium- to full-bodied, ample and velvety, it is suave and seamless, built around a perfectly controlled, dense core of fruit framed by powdery, structuring tannins and lively acidity, extending into a long, seemingly endless and ethereal finish. The blend comprises 52.7% Merlot, 29.6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 17.7% Cabernet Franc.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Graves

Graves, a venerable appellation in Bordeaux, France, is renowned for its historical significance and the production of distinguished red and white wines. What makes Graves unique is its diverse terroir, featuring gravelly soils that not only lend the region its name but also provide excellent drainage and heat reflection, contributing to the ripening of grapes. Red wines from Graves are predominantly blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a balanced expression of dark fruits, structure, and age-worthy potential. The appellation is also celebrated for its exceptional white wines, primarily crafted from Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon. These whites showcase bright acidity, citrus flavors, and a unique flinty character. Graves is home to renowned châteaux like Haut-Brion, a Premier Cru Classé, exemplifying the region's commitment to producing wines of exceptional quality and character. Vinous Media

Aromatically explosive and nuanced, the 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion is magnificent. It's silky, nuanced and exceptionally polished. I underestimated it from barrel. The blend includes 17% Cabernet Franc, among the highest ever here, and that comes through in the wine's explosiveness. The 2023 has come along beautifully over the last few years. What a fabulous surprise.

Absolute classic La Mission sexiness and opulence emerge from the 2023 Château La Mission Haut-Brion, a blend of ripe red and black currants, flowery incense, spice, tobacco, and subtle smoky notes. It's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered, graceful mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and outstanding length. This deep, rich, multi-dimensional La Mission will shine with just 4-5 years of bottle age and cruise for 30+ years. Drink 2029-2059.

The Wine Independent

96-98 2023 La Mission Haut-Brion has a massive, warm and fruity nose with polished freshness, peppery elements - and already at this stage hints of tobacco and saltiness. There are notes of raspberries and violets in the nose as well. This is a textbook La Mission with a raw and impressive core. It should develop nicely but hold your horses for 8-10 years and it should be even better. A very impressive glass.

#100 in Top 100 Wines of France 2026. Aromas of graphite. black currants, black cherries, blueberries, gravel and stones. Medium-bodied with muscular yet polished tannins that show tension. So classic, with a super-long, seamless finish. Salty and spicy at the end. 52.7% merlot, 29.6% cabernet sauvignon and 17.7% cabernet franc. Best after 2029.
