There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Lots of ripe black cherries, mulberries, Christmas spice, incense, and dried flower notes emerge from the 2019 Château La Tour Figeac, a classy, medium to full-bodied Saint-Emilion with supple, finely polished tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. This wonderful 2019 already offers loads of pleasure and will keep for 15-20 years, easily.

The 2019 La Tour Figeac is generous and charming, bursting with aromas of blueberry preserve, sweet spices, dark chocolate and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, supple and enveloping, with powdery tannins, succulent acids and a sweet core of fruit, it will offer a broad drinking window. It's produced from gravely soils and contains an appreciable percentage of very old vine Cabernet Franc.

A softly sweet and savoury nose. The texture here is great, smooth and satisfying. This is a dark, almost sticky style with sweet liquorice and chewy blackcurrants giving lift by a vein of minty freshness. Firm and muscular - there is clear power here, but it is also quite suave with high acidity and generous fruit. Spiced finish with some liquorice freshness. Appealing.

The 2019 La Tour Figeac has a floral and expressive bouquet with cedar and tobacco-infused black fruit, gaining clarity with aeration, the oak neatly enmeshed. The palate is ripe and nicely structured, showy in style, and judiciously spiced. A mouth filling concentrated finish will need time in bottle. There's a lot of wine here and it should repay cellaring. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting.

It leaps with vivacious notes of black raspberries and wild blueberries plus hints of iron ore, truffles, and clove oil. The medium to full-bodied palate is muscular and sturdy, with firm, chewy tannins and a mineral-laced finish.
