Tar, tobacco, mushroom and earth aromas. The primary fruit is beginning to recede, joined by an enveloping note of dried flowers. The palate is vibrant, with abundant, rounded fruit, persistent concentration and mouth-coating, polished tannins. There is power but also compelling composure. Still energetic, with a touch of firmness. Drinkable now with aeration, but it will continue to evolve for years to come. Drink or hold. 10 Years On retrospective.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Decanter

Slightly closed initially, showing a very appealing herbaceous perfume. The palate is elegant, supremely silky and perfectly balanced, with super-fine tannins integrated seamlessly. Poised and precise, this wine demonstrates extraordinary harmony and refinement. It needs time to fully reveal its potential but already hints at greatness – a Lafleur of exceptional quality, with the structure, finesse and aromatic purity to develop into a potentially perfect expression of the vintage.

The 2016 Lafleur is consistent with my previous notes. Brilliant delineation and focus on the nose, which is more introspective at first, opening with black plum, melted tar and Montecristo scents. The palate has real presence and heft, a bit square-jawed compared to the Petrus, yet the length is awesome. This will require serious patience. Tasted at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year-On tasting in London.

In the 2016 vintage, Lafleur has a sweet and jammy, round nose of truffles, cherries, red fruits and burned wood. It is full bodied and impressive with loads of velvety fruit supported by a layer of fine and granular tannins. It is a beautiful glass of wine, complex and aristocratic, neither heavy nor hard – but beautiful, complex and extremely well crafted. It is not yet completely ready and would benefit from another 5-7 years of cellaring.
