Full in the mouth, this is a soft and juicy wine at the outset. There is a cushioned, plump feel to the wine, with tannins that are firm, but rounded in nature. The wine seems ready to drink, but with its tannic structure, it will also age well. Drink from 2017.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

A balanced, refined 2011 with very polished tannins and pretty fruit. Medium to full body with shaved-milk-chocolate and currant character. Give it three or four year to soften. Better in 2017.

The 2011 Lagrange is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 6% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet in color, it features scents of beef dripping, wood smoke, and tobacco over a core of prunes, dried figs, and damp soil. The medium-bodied palate delivers mineral-laced black fruit layers with a lively line and grainy tannins, finishing long and savory.

The 2011 Lagrange was picked from 15 September until 5 October. This was a decent Saint-Julien from barrel. At eight years of age it lacks a little breeding on the nose and static, like I find some of the Left Bank wines in this vintage. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, fleshy and quite harmonious towards the silky textured finish. It improves with aeration and ends up being rather lovely, if not long-term. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate.
