Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

94-96 A step up over the 2020, the 2022 Château Le Gay brings more richness and depth and has a great nose of red and black fruits, flowery incense, baking spices, and scorched earth. Medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and balanced, it shines for its purity of fruit as well its silky tannins. This should have some early accessibility yet still evolve for decades.

The 2022 Le Gay is a floral, effusive Pomerol. Medium in body and gracious, with lovely silkiness, the 2022 is a charmer. Crushed flowers, bright-red toned fruit and hints of spice open nicely. Le Gay is vinified entirely in barrel, and yet the oak imprint is not at all dominant. Time in the glass releases a whole range of sweet floral accents that add an exotic flair. This is a very pretty and distinctive wine.

A very focused nose here, the aromatics smoky and precise, with black bean, liquorice, crushed chalk, white rose petals and tobacco oak, this really does lift its head well up above the level of many of its peers. A finely polished palate follows, quite focused and modestly delineated, and filled with degraded red fruits which comes infused with flower petals, crushed chalk and tobacco, with a densely wound spindle of tannins tightly packed underneath it all. This has nice coherence, even though there is a considerable build of tannins beneath the rather delicate seams of floral fruit, the whole holding together well into the finish, which is charged with nascent energy. An elegant, floral and lightly mineral Le Gay here, long and vibrant with rich and ripe tannins. It undoubtedly has potential for the cellar. Tasted twice.

Intensely perfumed and ripe on the nose, potent and smells a bit alcoholic. Ripe and fruit forward, smooth and supple, this has nice energy and motion despite the clear concentration of the fruit. Acidity is high and has a soft sweetness too, giving some extra nuance and shine to the palate. Well controlled, bright and vibrant - this packs a punch in terms of flavour and tannic strength although is also juicy, really bright and tangy. The tannins need to meld more with the acidity but there's lots of potential here. Rolland & Associés consultants. HVE certified. A yield of 23hl/ha. Tasted three times.

91-93 The 2022 Le Gay offers up aromas of rich cassis, menthol and toasty new oak, followed by a full-bodied, rich and rather muscular palate framed by sweet, liberally extracted tannins that assert themselves on the finish. While this remains quite a chunky, stylized wine, defined by its fermentation in new oak barriques, it is comparatively restrained for this estate in such an extreme vintage.

Not shy with the toast, this offers a layer of mocha and açaí paste draped over fresher flavors of raspberry and red currant coulis. The fruit shows persistence through the finish, but this seems more about power than range or freshness. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2038.
