Aromas of tar, earth, crushed stones, minerals and tobacco. Vibrant and youthful, medium- to full-bodied, with powerful concentration. Chalky tannins add definition as the fruit turns earthy. It shows power, but with finesse in the tannins. This will benefit from additional time in the bottle. Drink or hold. 10 Years On retrospective.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 L'If is a little shy to begin, opening out to show a beautiful red and black plums, kirsch and rose-laced personality, plus hints of tobacco and wild sage. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers beautifully ripe, satiny tannins and wonderful freshness supporting the elegant, perfumed fruits through the long finish.

This has a deft ripple of acidity which keeps you on your toes all the way through this wine. From the Le Pin stable, it is just as seductive as you would imagine, with soft, ripe damson fruits and barely-there tannins that caress the palate. They have 5ha located by Troplong Mondot, 2ha by La Segue, and a further 1ha right on the limestone plateau. 100% Merlot, they finished picking this wine on 20th October as the soils are so late ripening. Aged in 50% new oak. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040

The 2016 L'If has quite a high-toned bouquet compared with its peers. Blackcurrant and blueberry scents, not endowed with the complexity of say, Figeac or Canon in the same flight. The palate is medium-bodied, with a sweeter entry than its peers, juicy and succulent, with more blue fruit manifesting towards the finish. Fine, but not in the same class as the top Saint-Émilions. Tasted at Bordeaux Index's Ten-Year-On tasting in London.

Château L’If has a nose of rounded spicy fruit, very sweet with notes of fresh cherries, red berries and well defined fruit. The taste is fine and structured with juicy fruit and notes of plums supported by a fine layer of soft tannins at the end. This wine is almost ready to be consumed.
