#90 in Top 100 Wines of France 2026. This red is all about finesse and tension. Subtle aromas of dark berries, earth, mushrooms, lavender and violets. Medium-bodied with ultra-fine tannins and hints of chalk and spices such as nutmeg. Energetic at the end, with an almost pinot-like delicacy. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. Drinkable now, but better in a couple of years. Try after 2027.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2023 L'If is powerful, deep and beautifully layered. Blue/black fruit, new leather, licorice and cedar soar from the glass. A broad, ample wine with huge tannins, the 2023 appears to be destined for a long life. Time in the glass brings out hints of graphite and dried herbs that add complexity and a good bit of gravitas, too. Give this time.

93-94 2023 L’If has a fine, soft and silky nose – very pure and very elegant. On the nose there are hints of minerals, red berries, chalk and raspberries. You feel some tannins at the end but it is all very well interwoven into the fruity core of the wine. The aftertaste is long and tingling. This should age nicely. Save it for 5-7 years before touching a bottle.

A nicely ripe red, offering a youthful core of raspberry, cherry and plum coulis inlaid gently with iris and violet notes. Mulling spice and red tea hints add perfume on the finish, which shows sneaky length. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2027 through 2038. 833 cases made, 125 cases imported.

Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc that's brought up 12-16 months in 50% new oak with the balance in once-used barrels, the 2023 L'If is medium ruby-hued and semi-opaque. A pretty perfume of framboise, ripe cherries, graphite, crushed stone, and spring flowers all emerge from the nose, and it's medium-bodied on the palate, with integrated acidity and ripe tannins. It picks up an almost gun flint-like minerality, and while it's not massive, it shines for its complexity, balance, and length. Give it 3-4 years and enjoy over the following 15-20 years. Drink 2029-2048.
