There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Medium to deep garnet colored, the 2012 Lynch-Bages offers broody notes of fried herbs, tar, and tobacco to begin, leading to a core of cassis and stewed cherries with a hint of cast-iron pan. The medium-bodied palate is firm, grainy, and refreshing with plenty of restrained youthful black fruits, finishing with a lively lift.

This has a very solid core of dark plum, crushed black currant and blackberry fruit, with lightly firm flesh and good drive through the finish, where alder and iron notes fill in. Shows excellent energy and depth, while harnessing the austere edge of the vintage. Best from 2018 through 2025.

Aromas of blackcurrants, blueberries and lemons follow through to a full body, firm tannins and a fresh, clean finish. A little tight now but excellent. Precision to this. Back ended. Better in 2018.

A solid-structured wine with blackcurrant Cabernet very much in evidence, though the blend contained the wine’s highest ever percentage of Merlot (26%). Proper Pauillac but a slight trace of bitterness detracts.

The 2012 Lynch Bages is much more closed on the nose after the 2012 Grand-Puy-Lacoste. Blackberry and cedar, pencil box and light minty scents gradually unfold. The palate is balanced with a chewy opening. Solid with plenty of dense black fruit, but I find this just lacking delineation and comes across a bit "blocky" on the granular, slightly austere, graphite-tinged finish, confirmed by a second bottle at the Bordeaux Index horizontal. This is just a bit rough around the edges. Tasted twice at Bordeaux Index's Ten Year-On tasting and blind at the Southwold Ten-Year On tasting.

Winery Notes

Lynch-Bages is smooth, elegant, well-balanced with a nice length and mellowed tannins. Plenty of fruit and liquorice to finish.
