There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2022 Château Moulin Riche is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon yet includes 25% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. This deep purple-hued effort offers gorgeous darker currants and plum fruits intermixed with smoky tobacco, graphite, and chocolaty notes. I love its overall balance, and it's a classic, deep, rich, full-bodied 2022 with a round, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a great finish.

A well-fruited red, with a lushness to its display of plum, boysenberry and blackberry compote flavors thanks to the fairly velvety structure. Freshly plowed humus and cast iron notes give the finish a grounded feel as the fruit cruises through. Nicely done. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2038. Tasted twice, with consistent notes.

The 2022 Moulin Riche is such a deep wine. Black fruit, leather, licorice, incense, menthol and chocolate infuse the palate with striking depth. A wine of breadth and resonance, Moulin Riche has a ton to offer. The blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. Once again, an unusually high percentage of Petit Verdot gives the wine much of its distinctive personality.

The Wine Independent

The Moulin Riche is a combination of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot, the strong showing from this latter variety reflecting a large area planted to Petit Verdot running down the centre of the vineyard. The élevage was 18 months, in just 25% new oak. The nose here is a masterclass in aromatic Bordeaux seduction, all dried currants, coffee bean, cranberry, crushed chalk and oyster shell, a little dark chocolate too, with a perfumed, gravelly, minty freshness. The palate lives up to expectations, with a very polished and seamless start, and then the middle maintains this bright fruit profile, with a slowly unfurling core of tannins beneath it, which show firmly on the finish, before a length filled with savoury tannins and dried dark fruits. This is a fabulous Moulin Riche with great cellaring potential. Tasted three times. The alcohol on the label is 14%.
