A gorgeous example of this château in Pomerol, the 2023 Château Nénin is a blend of 67% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon that was aged 16 months in 40% new French oak. Ripe red and black fruits, chocolaty herbs, graphite, and damp earth all shine on the nose, and it’s medium to full-bodied, with a rich, layered, textured mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a great finish. I wouldn’t be surprised to see this turn out to be the greatest Nénin ever produced. Drink 2028-2053.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2023 Nénin is pliant and super expressive right out of the gate. Blackberry, incense, licorice, grilled herbs and tobacco build nicely in the glass. This is the first vintage that includes a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. Brisk acids and beams of tannin shape this classy, structured Pomerol. Nicely done.
