The 2023 Pavie is fabulous, just as it was en primeur. Vibrant, deep and layered, the 2023 is bursting with energy. This is one of the most refined, elegant wines I have ever tasted at Pavie. Even with all of that tension, the 2023 has plenty of the rich, textured fruit and palate presence that are such signatures of the house style. Superb.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Ripe black fruits, graphite, crushed stone, chocolate, and some truffly earth nuances all define the 2023 Château Pavie, a gorgeous wine that's certainly up with the crème de la crème of the vintage. Based on 65% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon and aged 20 months in 72% new French oak, it's medium to full-bodied, with a concentrated, layered mouthfeel and a great finish. The purity, balance, and elegance here are absolutely brilliant. Hide bottles for 4-5 years if you can, and it will shine for three decades. Drink 2030-2060.

Aromatic nose, clean and clear, lovely pristine black and red fruits, some dark chocolate with violets, graphite and liquorice. Gorgeous succulence, this is so clear and crystalline with some juicy strawberry and bitter orange. A touch of tension gives the backbone and structure - great direction and movement from start to finish. Poised and piercing - so direct - I love the finesse and refinement, everything feels so elegant. Layered and complex but with zing, a sense of life and tons of energy. Still compact, no doubt, as you'd expect but tannins are fine and the wine has been well constructed - this will be delicious. An impressive showing for Pavie in 2023. 3.66pH.

A bold wine. Perfumed aromas of violets, sandalwood, blackberries, blueberries and graphite. Full-bodied but not overpowering, with lots of fruit, juicy tannins and a powerful finish. Chewy. 51% merlot, 32% cabernet franc and 17% cabernet sauvignon. Need five or six years to come around. Try after 2030.

95-96 2023 Pavie is ink dark with a rather closed nose. It has a well structured, peppery taste, with notable tannins and lots of fresh fruit on top. It is a modern style of winemaking different from the dark charcoal infested Pavie’s produced in the start of the century. The taste is subtle, juicy and spicy with a modern touch of freshness and this vintage of Pavie should be approachable in 7-10 years time.

Plush, warm and inviting in style, this red offers a broad, caressing and steadily rolling wave of plum sauce and boysenberry reduction that combines seamlessly with black tea, cocoa and roasted apple wood notes. There’s a licorice snap echo on the finish. For those that like a little bling with their wine. Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Best from 2027 through 2040.
