There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

This is a big-hearted wine, ripe with both black-plum flavors and generous tannins. At this stage the structure is prominent, but with the weight of the fruits, the wine will balance out full, ripe and ready to drink from 2026.

Heady scents of wild flowers and cassis fruit with dried herbs and liquorice accents. Full and fleshy, this is round and mouth filling with juicy, chewy fruit that has bitter toasted edges of cinnamon, dark chocolate, espresso and cedar. On the ripe fruit side, with flashes of heat, but the texture is lovely, sleek and direct with structured, integrated chalky tannins and a fresh mentholated and eucalyptus finish. Needs to soften a little more, but this is a classic take on the vintage with appealing typicity. Round, filling, charming in a dark, sultry way. From a 70-hectare vineyard on gravel. This is a blend of 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Ageing 12 months in oak, 33% new and 67% second and third-fill barrels.

2018 Poujeaux. This wine is almost ink dark and has a wonderful sweet and crunchy cabernet-like nose. The taste is deep and soft, filled with blackberries and cassis. The viscosity of the wine is very special, and you feel the pricky almost glycerin like juice when tasting it. This vintage of Poujeaux is one of the most interesting I have encountered and it should develop nicely. You can approach it now and it should be a great wine to consume during the next 20+ years.

Just as it was from barrel, the 2018 Poujeaux is superb. Succulent red cherry, spice, cedar, tobacco and leather give the 2018 striking textural richness to match is bold, racy personality. Silky tannins make the 2018 very easy to taste now, but this is a wine with the potential to age beautifully for many years. Impressive.

There are lots of impressive Moulis in this vintage and the 2018 Château Poujeaux is one of them. This medium to full-bodied, soft, nicely textured, mouth-filling beauty has lots of blackberry and black cherry fruit, notes of tobacco and damp earth, no hard edges, and a great finish. It's certainly an outstanding wine and has another decade of prime drinking or more ahead of it. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot, aged in one-third new French oak.
