There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The 2020 Sociando-Mallet is very attractive, exhibiting aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pencil shavings, loamy soil, tobacco leaf and licorice. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with lively acids and powdery tannins, it's a strong effort from a site that always does well in warm vintages. The 2020 is a blend of 53% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Cabernet Franc.

Wonderfully fragrant on the nose, just stopping short of being potent. Glorious perfumed scents and rich, ripe black fruits. Clean and clear, this has a lively energy to it and a little bit of liquorice which gives a savoury, dark and sticky edge to the fruit. Clarity, classicism and precision on show. Sculpted, muscular, grippy and chewy. Excellent potential with a slate and coffee-toned finish.

The 2020 Sociando-Mallet is deep garnet-purple in color. It charges out with bold notes of blackcurrant pastilles, blackberry preserves, and Bing cherries, followed by hints of bay leaves, tilled soil, and cloves. The medium-bodied palate is bright and intense, with a firm backbone of grainy tannins and a refreshing line, finishing long with compelling purity.

The 2020 Sociando-Mallet shows more new oak on the nose than its peers, though there is sufficient brambly red fruit to soak that up. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and well-delineated with bitter cherry and a splash of balsamic. It's granular in texture with satisfying length and a side order of classicism. Give this a couple of years in bottle. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.
