This is a big wine from Sociando-Mallet. Massive, very full and very muscular, with so much tannin in a dusty way. Powdery, tight and really well made. Atypical, massively fine tannins that are less Bordelais, but the quality is outstanding. Long, ample and dissolved. 63% merlot, 35% cabernet sauvignon and 2% cabernet franc. Better from 2029. From a vertical tasting at the winery.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

The 2022 Sociando-Mallet is a beauty, wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, plums, pencil shavings, espresso roast, licorice and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, it's velvety and layered, with powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. It's a blend of 63% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. As I wrote en primeur, readers who remember how this estate acquitted itself in years such as 2003 and 1990 will not be surprised by its quality in 2022.

The Wine Independent

The blend is led by Merlot in 2022, with 63% of the total, along with 35% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. There is a density of pigment in the glass, and sweet wealth of fruit on the nose, both of which are immediately reassuring. I find notes of damson, liquorice, blackcurrant and toast, a little surprising given the assemblage, while the palate is similarly rich in dark and savoury fruits. Underneath is a robust, confident, dry but tightly knit tannic structure which suggests this is a Sociando-Mallet set for the long haul, the tannins lingering with intent in the finish. A very smart result for the Gautreau family. The alcohol on the label is 14%.
