Excellent depth to this exciting St.-Emilion, with aromas of dark cherries, black plums, chalk and touches of cocoa powder and graphite. Structured and flavorful, with a full body and dense, chalky tannins. This is polished with fine, chalky tannins. Dense but not chunky or heavy. 80% merlot and 20% cabernet franc. From organically grown grapes. Better from 2027.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Sporting a deep purple/plum hue, the 2023 Château Tour Saint Christophe offers cassis, black cherries, graphite, new leather, and crushed stone on the nose. Coming from a gorgeous hillside, terraced vineyard on the eastern, cooler side of the appellation, it has terrific minerality and is medium-bodied and concentrated on the palate, with a pure, graceful, layered mouthfeel, ultra-fine tannins, and no hard edges. Based on 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc and aged 18 months in 25% new French oak with the balance in round wooden vats and neutral barrels, this ultra-classic, serious, limestone-driven Saint-Emilion should be snatched up by savvy readers. It will keep for two decades. There are roughly 7,300 cases produced. Drink 2027-2045.

Medium-to full-bodied, layered and seamless, it is animated by lively acidity and a juicy texture, concluding with a long, calcareous and ethereal finish that speaks clearly of its limestone soils.

A little compact still but there’s lovely styling here with a real signature mineral grip - flint, wet stone, slate adding the salty, chalkiness to the finish. Quite ripe fruit with cooling acidity gives a serious tone as opposed to super bright and lively but this is well constructed with concentration and intensity. Quite an opulent edge to this which many don’t have.

The 2023 Tour Saint Christophe opens with a strong burst of red/purplish fruit, lavender, chocolate, spice, menthol and licorice. It offers plenty of textural intensity and fruit depth, but it's hard to fully get past angular tannins that lurk beneath. This feels aggressive, especially in its contours. Tasted two times.
