Frédéric Castèja sent me a bottle of the 2016 Trotte Vieille after its under-par showing at the Southwold tasting. I gave this bottle a two-hour decant. It has an intense nose of red and blue fruit with a touch of violet and inkwell. Fine delineation. The palate is sweet and succulent on the entry with supple, rounded tannins, a little glossy at the moment. Maybe, even after a decade, there is still a bit of puppy fat to lose. Youthful, plush and generous, it will require another three-to-five years in bottle. This was much more like it!
