A blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Château Villemaurine is killer stuff, offering black raspberries, black cherries, violets, floral notes, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied, pure, deep, and seamless, it’s layered and rich yet incredibly balanced, with fine tannins and an elegant mouthfeel. Huge minerality and a liquid rock-like character make this a stunning effort. Aged for 16 months in 70% new and 30% one-year-old barrels, it’s going to evolve gracefully for 30+ years. Total production: 3,000 cases.

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act â€“ the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Plenty of blue fruits such as currants with cherries, berries, some fresh herbs and limestone. Medium- to full-bodied, this has chewy tannins and a savory finish with energy at the end, firm and slightly austere in a very good way. Limestone character coming through. Drink after 2028 and beyond.

The 2022 Villemaurine is just as impressive as it was en primeur. Blood orange, jammy red fruit, cedar, tobacco and scorched earth infuse the 2022 with notable complexity. Brisk acids pull it all together as floral notes extend the pliant, beautifully resonant finish. This powerhouse Saint-Émilion delivers the goods. Tasted two times.

The Wine Independent

The 2022 from this estate is a blend of 76% Merlot and 24% Cabernet Franc, matured for 16 months in barrel, using 70% new oak. It opens with a dark, smoky, focused and richly polished nose, layered with notes of sweet liquorice, tar and blackberry. The palate provides a similarly dark and brooding core of fruit, with a svelte and polished texture, filled out with salted black bean, liquorice and currant. It has high alcohol, and this shows in the texture, but it does not go too far overboard with it, the palate holding onto a juicy sense of balance despite the dark and glossy black fruits and firm tannic backbone. Ultimately, very modern in style, but attractive with it. It has potential. Tasted three times. The alcohol on the label is 15%, not that unusual in St Emilion in this vintage, and I get no heat from it at all.
