The Rhone region of France has been producing superb quality white blended wines for centuries, and is a region highly respected and esteemed around the world, with plenty of New World countries keen to emulate the styles and techniques displayed by the historic wineries and skilled vintners of the area. The secret to the Rhone's success when it comes to blended white wines is the careful and expert selection of certain grape varietals, which each lend special features to the blended wine and bring balance and harmony to the bottle. Most commonly, blended white Rhone wines feature no more than two grapes of either the Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne or Grenache Blanc varietals, and are renowned for their exceptional flavors and highly aromatic, floral character.
France, often regarded as the heart of the wine world, boasts a rich history, diverse terroirs, and a captivating variety of grape varietals. From the renowned vineyards of Bordeaux to the picturesque landscapes of Burgundy, France offers a wine lover’s dream journey. Whether you’re new to the world of wine or a seasoned enthusiast looking […]
The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.
Appellation
Chateauneuf Du Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. The appellation's commitment to traditional winemaking, coupled with its unique terroir, results in wines that exemplify the quintessence of Southern Rhône winemaking, offering enthusiasts a captivating taste of history and the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence.

Undoubtedly one of the best Châteauneufs of the vintage, Clos des Papes's 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape was in surprisingly fine form. Full-bodied but wonderfully silky with age, it shows developing aromas and flavors of tree bark, cola, dried spices, red cherries and white button mushrooms. While I wouldn't expect it to last forever, it should provide delicious drinking over the next 5 years or so. It was made from tiny yields of 16 hectoliters per hectare and reached 14.7% alcohol in what was a challenging vintage in the Southern Rhône.

A consistent showing by the 2008 Clos des Papes Châteauneuf-du-Pape and this continues to offer upfront, immediate appeal, with perfumed, complex aromatics, a medium to full-bodied, supple mouth feel, and no shortage of length on the finish. Despite the approachable nature here, it has excellent tannin and grip. While a superb drink now, this delicious, burgundian styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape will evolve gracefully for another decade or more.

Bright ruby. A heady bouquet displays fresh red berries, sandalwood, dried flowers and a hint of baking spices. Creamy in texture, with lively acidity lifting sweet red and dark berry and candied rose flavors.
Becomes sappier with air and finishes with very good clarity and lingering spiciness. Avril thinks this wine will surprise people with its ability to age.
