Vincent Avril’s 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape has turned out even more beautifully than expected, wafting from the glass with aromas of lilac, menthol, crushed flowers and sweet red berries. Medium- to full-bodied, it’s structured and layered, with an unusually austere profile for Clos des Papes, yet it remains poised and textural, its fleshy core of fruit framed by ultra-refined tannins. The finish is ethereal, delicate and penetrating—a quietly confident wine that should evolve with grace over the coming decade and beyond.

Varietal

Red Rhone Blend

The Rhone region of France has been producing superb quality white blended wines for centuries, and is a region highly respected and esteemed around the world, with plenty of New World countries keen to emulate the styles and techniques displayed by the historic wineries and skilled vintners of the area. The secret to the Rhone's success when it comes to blended white wines is the careful and expert selection of certain grape varietals, which each lend special features to the blended wine and bring balance and harmony to the bottle. Most commonly, blended white Rhone wines feature no more than two grapes of either the Viognier, Rousanne, Marsanne or Grenache Blanc varietals, and are renowned for their exceptional flavors and highly aromatic, floral character.

Region

Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Appellation

Chateauneuf Du Pape

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds are known for their full-bodied nature, rich dark fruit flavors, and a medley of spices, all underscored by a unique herbaceous quality known as garrigue. The appellation's commitment to traditional winemaking, coupled with its unique terroir, results in wines that exemplify the quintessence of Southern Rhône winemaking, offering enthusiasts a captivating taste of history and the sun-drenched landscapes of Provence.

A richly styled, opulent Châteauneuf that offers a streamlined cascade of ripe cherry, licorice root and toasted chestnut. Mineral energy keeps this powering long distance, with a smoldering foundation of iron. Starts off silky in feel, with a caressing texture quickly firmed up by fine tannins that hold real power. Hints of wet soil and baking spices detail the long, winding finish. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Best from 2026 through 2042. (Collectible)

#92 in Top 100 Wines of France, 2024. A silky, textural and harmonious red with notes of dark cherries, fresh blackberries, dried thyme, currants and some mild spices. It's medium-bodied with finely grained tannins. Elegant and graceful, silky and bright. Fresh center palate with plenty of vitality and a caressing texture. Precise and harmonious with a pure expression of fruit at the center and a vibrant, spicy finish. Drink or hold.

#42 of Top 100, 2024. The alluring 2022 Châteauneuf-du-Pape won me over in a heartbeat. Vivid licorice, sage, blueberry, lavender, red and black cherry as well as crushed flowers hail from the glass. Full-bodied and intense, the 2022 packs ample flavor concentration yet always maintains balance through lifting freshness. Polished tannins neatly structure this ambitious 2022 that has the potential to age gracefully for at least two decades.
