A plush but restrained and complex red showing excellent ripeness. Fine spices, cocoa powder, iodine, blackberries and dark plums on the nose. Almost full-bodied but still agile, with seamless tannins and a very long finish. Firm yet powdery, with juicy and al-dente fruit. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Already approachable, but can age.

Varietal

Red Bordeaux

There are few regions in the world with stricter regulations in regards to wine production and grape varietals than those found in Bordeaux, France. Here, in the home of the world's finest wines, the type and quality of grapes used is of utmost importance, and the legendary wineries which work on the banks of the Gironde river have mastered the careful art of juice blending to find the perfect balance for their produce. Whilst there are six 'official' Bordeaux grapes, the two key varietals for almost every fine Bordeaux wine are Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and with good reason. Whilst Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are renowned for their acidity and astringency, strong fruit and spice flavors and full body, Merlot grapes are notably rounded, soft, fleshy and lighter on tannin. The combination of these two varietals, along with a small percentage of (commonly) Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc, is the perfect balancing act – the two grape varietals cancel out each others weaker points, and accentuate all that is good about the other.

Appellation

Pomerol

Pomerol, a distinguished appellation on Bordeaux's Right Bank, stands as a vinous jewel celebrated for its exceptional Merlot-dominant red wines. What makes Pomerol unique is its relatively small size, allowing for an intimate focus on individual vineyards and an emphasis on artisanal winemaking. Unlike many Bordeaux regions, Pomerol does not have a formal classification system, placing the spotlight on each estate's intrinsic quality and distinct terroir. Merlot thrives in Pomerol's clay-rich soils, crafting wines of opulence, velvety texture, and alluring plum and black cherry notes. Iconic châteaux like Pétrus and Le Pin showcase the pinnacle of Pomerol's winemaking prowess. The absence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blends further accentuates the appellation's uniqueness. Pomerol wines are revered for their approachability in youth and the ability to evolve gracefully over time, exemplifying the timeless elegance and allure of this exceptional Bordeaux appellation.

Vinous Media

The 2023 Clos du Clocher is quite the powerhouse. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, licorice, incense and chocolate stain the palate. There's no shortage of intensity here; that much is evident. Broad tannins give Clos du Clocher a rather ample textural feel.

Red and black fruit as well as graphite, dried flowers, chocolate, and a beautiful sense of minerality all emerge from the 2023 Clos Du Clocher, a gorgeous, classic Pomerol. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it has a pure, graceful, layered mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This estate deserves more recognition in the market, as they're consistently producing wines that play with the crème de la crème. It's approachable today yet has another 20 years of prime drinking ahead of it. Drink 2026-2045.

The Wine Independent

92-93 2023 Clos du Clocher has an ink dark colour and an elegant, crunchy nose of intense fruit, cherries and sweet caramel. The wine is well built, with a stout, tannic, strong backbone, and dark, spicy fruit. It expresses dry and tannic elements in the aftertaste and it is a Pomerol that will require sufficient cellaring in order for all elements to meld together.

Wine Spectator

Soft and generous in feel, with a gush of dark cherry and blackberry compote backed by singed black tea and dried anise on the finish. A subtle echo of cold cast iron at the tail end keeps this honest. Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2027 through 2038. 1,600 cases made, 63 cases imported.
