Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. What makes Châteauneuf-du-Pape unique is its historic heritage, boasting ancient vineyards and a rich winemaking tradition dating back to the papal residence in Avignon. The region allows an assemblage of up to 13 grape varieties, prominently featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre. The distinctive galets, large round stones that retain heat, dotting the vineyards contribute to the wines' complexity and distinctive character. So deep yet so refined, this great Chateauneuf combines stacks of black fruit with notes of tar and licorice, with flashes of red fruits lightening the picture. The huge fine tannins and the interplay with the beautifully ripe fruits provide the base for this majestic wine. Very long spicy finish. A cuvee of 90% grenache from century old vines with 5% syrah and 5% mourvedre. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape La Cuvée Du Papet is made in a more structured, age-worthy style and is 90% Grenache and 5% each Syrah and Mourvedre. Its slightly darker ruby color is followed by a gorgeous perfume of savory red and black fruits, ground pepper, garrigue, and chalky minerality. These all carry over to the palate, where the wine is full-bodied, has a dense, powerful mid-palate, lots of ripe tannins, and a great, great finish. It needs to be hidden for 4-5 years and will evolve beautifully over the following two decades. I suspect it will be one of the longest-lived wines in the vintage.

An alluring wine, with a mix of ripe damson plum, red currant and spice cake wrapped around a core of firm iron. Reveals clove and apple wood smoke that add depth and warmth, and the long finish is powered by minerality and grainy tannins. Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. Best from 2024 through 2035.
