Based on the same blend of 65% Grenache with lots of Cinsault, the 2023 Châteauneuf Du Pape is gorgeous, showing kirsch, blackberries, sappy spring flowers, pepper, and subtle minerality with an almost scorched earth-like character. Medium to full-bodied, beautifully textured, seamless and layered, it has ultra-fine tannins, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It’s another sensationally layered, seamless wine from this estate that would best most Grand Cru Red Burgundies in a blind tasting and reminds me slightly of the 2020. Hide bottles for 4-5 years and enjoy over the following 15 years. Drink 2028-2038.

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Impressively structured, long-haul tannins. It’s fresh and well balanced, with good acidity and alcohol that warms without excess heat. This is a serious, savoury style that should age for longer than most from this vintage, with real intensity and drive and a long finish. Grown mainly on galets roulés and sand of Les Serres; fermented in concrete, aged in mixed vessels, with no new oak.
