Piedirosso

Piedirosso, also known as Per 'e Palummo in the local dialect, is a red grape variety native to the Campania region of southern Italy, particularly around the Vesuvius volcano near Naples. The name Piedirosso translates to "red foot," referring to the grape's reddish-colored stalks and stems. Wines made from Piedirosso are characterized by their medium-bodied structure, soft tannins, and vibrant acidity, with flavors of red cherries, raspberries, and a subtle herbal note. What makes Piedirosso unique is its historical significance and its association with the volcanic soils of Mount Vesuvius, which contribute to the grape's distinctive flavor profile. The wines are often unoaked or aged briefly in neutral vessels to preserve their fruity character and freshness. Piedirosso wines pair well with a variety of Italian dishes, including pizza Margherita, pasta with tomato-based sauces, and grilled vegetables, making them a versatile choice for both casual and formal dining occasions.

Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Italy remains very much a 'land of wines', and one could not imagine this country, its landscape and culture, without it.

The beautiful region of Campania, located in the 'shin' of Italy's boot, has been an important center for viticulture and wine making for thousands of years. Indeed, archaeologists believe that wine making was happening in Campania as long ago as 1,200 BCE, making this one of the oldest wine regions on earth. By the time the Roman Empire starting expanding, Campania became the world's most important wine producing region, and the hundred or so native grape varietals which flourish in the mineral rich soils near the coast became the key ingredient in many of Rome's legendary classical wines. Today, the wine industry in Campania is booming once more, following a drop in the region's reputation in the 1970s, and is gaining awards, recognition and new fans each year.

Winery Notes

Contrada Salandra’s Piedirosso explores what is possible with this grape from this appellation. Composed of 95% Piedirosso and 5% co-planted ancient varietals (Ricciulella, Marsigliese, Colagiovanna) from 2.5 hectares of ungrafted vines at 90-200m above sea level. The vineyards were planted around 40 years ago. In the cellar, the grapes are destemmed and fermented in stainless steel. Maceration lasted a staggering 45 days, practically unheard of for Piedirosso. Aging is for 20 months in stainless steel. There is no fining or filtering and total so2 added is around 10mg/L. The wine ages in bottle for an additional 6 months before release.
