Frappato is a red grape variety native to Sicily, particularly associated with the southeastern region around the town of Vittoria. It produces wines that are light-bodied, aromatic, and known for their bright acidity. Frappato wines typically exhibit flavors of red berries such as raspberry and strawberry, along with floral notes of violet and a hint of spice. They are characterized by their soft tannins and refreshing, juicy character, making them ideal for early consumption. What makes Frappato unique is its role in Sicilian winemaking, where it is often blended with Nero d'Avola to create Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG wines, the only DOCG in Sicily. Frappato's fruity and floral profile adds elegance and freshness to the blend, showcasing the grape's ability to reflect Sicily's sunny climate and limestone-rich soils. Indeed, Sicilian wineries are famed for their ability to capture something of the sun-drenched region in their wines, and the vines they cultivate benefit enormously from the almost constant sunshine and the incredibly fertile volcanic soils which typify the island.
