The 2021 El Tiznado is a much more concentrated, powerful wine. Based on 100% Tempranillo, it comes from incredibly old vines and was brought up in new 228-liter and 500-liter barrels. Cassis, ripe black cherries, scorched earth, savory, lead pencil, and spicy notes all define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied on the palate, with a concentrated, flawlessly balanced profile. I love its tannins, and it has remarkable purity and a great finish. Give this riveting Rioja 2-4 years and enjoy over the following two decades.

The 2021 El Tiznado feels young, aromatic and a bit creamy, ripe and juicy, dense and full-bodied, with abundant, fine-grained and chalky tannins. It's a powerful and elegant Tempranillo from vines planted in 1923, a plot called El Hoyo in the village of San Vicente de la Sonsierra on red limestone soils at 500 meters in altitude. The destemmed grapes fermented in small oak vats for 21 days, followed by malolactic and élevage in 228-liter French oak barrels for 18 months. 1,186 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2023.

The 2021 El Tiznado originates from a vineyard planted in 1923 in the Peciña Valley, San Vicente de La Sonsierra, Rioja Alavesa. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, this purple-red wine offers enticing aromas of black fruit, with hints of blueberry and blackberry complemented by notes of violets and wild herbs. On the palate, it presents a dry, rich and juicy profile, with its structured and compact texture leading to a long-lasting, flavorful finish. This vintage truly reflects the sandy loam soils of the Sonsierra valleys, crafted from what appears to be a mild and beautiful growing season.
