89-92 Moderate wood is present on the lightly phenolic aromas of pear, apple and a whisper of mineral reduction. The middle weight flavors are not quite as rich and enveloping but they’re finer while offering just a bit more underlying tension that carries over to the utterly delicious and sappy finale. This too needs better complexity but the necessarily material appears up to the task.

Varietal

Chardonnay

Of all the white wine grape varietals, surely the one that has spread the furthest and is most widely appreciated is Chardonnay. This green-skinned grape is now grown all over the Old and New Worlds, from New Zealand to the Americas, from England to Chile, and is one of the first varietals people think of when considering white wine grapes. Perhaps this is because of its huge popularity, which reached a peak in the 1990s, thanks to new technologies combining with traditional methods to bring the very best features out of the Chardonnay grape and allow its unique qualities to shine through. Most fine Chardonnay wines use a process known as malolactic fermentation, wherein the malic acids in the grape juice are converted to lactic acids, allowing a creamier, buttery nature to come forward in the wine. No grape varietal is better suited to this process than Chardonnay, which manages to balance these silky, creamy notes with fresh white fruit flavors beautifully.

Wine Advocate

The 2024 Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru La Maréchaude Le Bas opens with an expressive nose of ripe orchard fruit and blossom. The palate veers more tropical with passion fruit, yet despite its concentration and ripeness, the wine remains evenly composed, with its weight spreading evenly across the palate. Medium- to full-bodied, it is balanced by tangy acidity, a mouthwatering saline edge and a touch of orange-rind bitterness.

Winery Notes

• Certified organic. • 100% Chardonnay. • In Vergisson below the Roche de Vergisson. • 50+ year old vines. • From the bottom part of Maréchaude with a bit more clay. • 250 meters altitude. • Indigenous yeast. • Fermented and aged in barrel (20% new).
