Long Term Pre-arrival Definition: Ordering wine directly through us from our supplier partners in Europe in advance of the item’s physical arrival in the US.
Long Term Pre-arrival sales ensure you’re getting the best possible price and that you have also secured the product before it hits the normal retail supply chain. The lead time for Pre-arrival goods is generally 4–8 months, sometimes longer based on supply chain and the logistics of transporting goods overseas. The expectation, from our team, is to communicate to the customer the location of their purchase every step of the way.
This product is offered as a full case purchase option, minimum order quantities may be applicable. When available, multiple case options will be presented. If you are purchasing a Pre-Arrival item you must order a solid case.
Rapid Ship
Items listed as "rapid ship" are in stock and available for immediate pickup or shipment. Those that do not have the "rapid ship" icon are housed with our supplier and must be transferred to our warehouse before they can be picked up or shipped. This requires 4-6 business days but usually occurs sooner. Some products will list both options of availability as there will be a certain number in stock, with the option to order additional bottles to be transferred from the supplier.

Bottled in 2008, the 1908 Boal Reserva is just as saturated in color and concentrated in flavor as one would expect, offering up complex aromas of figs, walnuts, warm spices, beeswax and pitch. Full-bodied, dense and muscular, it’s searingly intense, with huge depth, sapidity and extract; but after a century in wood and demijohn, this is more of a wine reduction than a wine itself, and just like some of the most hyper-concentrated wines of Jerez, this is easier to sip than it is to drink.
Boal (or Bual in English) is a white grape variety best known for its role in Madeira wine, where it produces a medium-sweet, richly textured fortified wine. Grown primarily on the island of Madeira, Boal thrives in the warmer, lower-altitude vineyards, allowing it to develop its signature balance of sweetness and acidity.
What makes Boal unique is its complex flavor profile and exceptional aging potential. As a medium-sweet Madeira, it sits between Verdelho (drier) and Malmsey (sweeter) in style. Boal Madeira is characterized by caramelized citrus, dried fruit, nuts, spice, and toffee notes, with bright acidity that prevents it from feeling overly heavy. The canteiro aging process, where barrels mature in warm conditions, enhances its oxidative, nutty complexity.
Boal Madeira pairs beautifully with nut-based desserts, fruit tarts, and blue cheese, offering a luxurious and layered drinking experience. Its balance of sweetness, acidity, and depth makes it one of Madeira’s most beloved styles.

Today, the varied terroir and climate across Portugal allows a great range of wines to be made each year, from the fresh and dry Vinho Verde wines to the famous and widely drunk fortified Port wines, and many in between.

Madeira
The beautiful and sun-drenched island of Madeira, found off of the north west coast of Africa and which are part of Portugal, have long been the home to one of the world's most loved and widely drank fortified wines, named after the island itself. Madeira is a fascinating island, and one which played an important role in the discovery of the wider world, as it was a vital port between Europe and Africa, or the Americas to the west. The island has been producing wines since the 17th century, when the fortified wine it is famous for was first made, by adding grape spirits to still wines in order to stop it from turning bad on the long sea voyages. Today, the island still has a rich wine industry, helped by the almost tropical oceanic climate it enjoys, and the exceptional soils which support a wide range of grape varietals.

The 1908 Boal Reserva is a Madeira that I have encountered two or three times. This centenary bottling is deep amber in color. The nose conveys a wonderful sense of purity and features nectarine, fig and saffron; traces of crustacea emerge with time. The very well-balanced palate is quite intense with a potent oxidative tang, fanning out on the vibrant finish. Excellent.
Winery Notes
Pours deep dark amber. On the nose, orange zest, coffee and roasted nuts. On the palate, candied nuts, candied oranges, tangerine, coffee. Tastes sweet or dry depending on what you're eating with it.
The acidic finish goes on forever and makes you want to have another almond.
