89-92 A discreet though not invisible touch of wood frames the beautifully spicy and notably ripe aromas that also retain a lovely freshness to the dense fruit that speaks of black cherry, raspberry and lilac scents. As it always is this is bigger, richer and more full-bodied than its two villages level siblings with good power to the firm but seductively textured flavors that also deliver excellent depth and length. This is less finely detailed but more than compensates with the notably great depth. Terrific quality at this level.

The 2013 Vosne Romanée Hautes Maizières comes from more clay soils than the La Combes Brûlées, and has dark berry, mulberry and red plum notes on the nose, bashful at first but opening with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin, slightly grainy in texture, with a slightly foursquare but nicely focused finish. Give this 12 to 18 months once bottled.
