Rhone Valley

The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. The region itself is split into two distinct sub-regions, with the northern sub-region being famed for its production of exceptional Syrah, Marsanne, Roussane and Viognier wines, packed full of interesting character and expressing the terroir found there. The southern sub-region is home to an enormous variety of grapes, and produces red, white and rosé wines, and some of the world's most famous and adored blended wines. The continental climate of the region is ideal for growing grapes, and the winds which blow from the Central Massif help temper the heat in the vineyards, leading to very ripe fruits holding plenty of flavor.

Châteauneuf-du-Pape, an illustrious wine appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley, France, stands as a vinous icon recognized for its robust red blends. A supple and perfumy version, with an expressive mix of red plum, rooibos tea and sandalwood smoke. Salty, sanguine tones move in, and everything is grounded by wet paving stone and graphite. The tannins are glossy, with just a hint of graininess on the bitter-edged finish. Finessed and delicious. The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape Vin de la Solitude appears riper and slightly more oxidative than the 2022, showing a somewhat evolved profile at this early stage. It opens with aromas of oak, spices, dried plums and baked dark berries. Medium- to full-bodied, dense and concentrated, it boasts a rich core of fruit and chewy tannins, leading to a long, spicy finish. Abundantly tannic and marked by its oak, this blend of several grape varieties was matured in used barrels, but the overall impression leans toward excess, with ripeness and wood somewhat overpowering finesse.

Vin de la Solitude is a tribute to our ancestor Paul Martin, who was one of the first French winemakers to sell his wine in bottles in the 18th century under the name “Vin de la Solitude”. Elegant and refined wine, tannic while remaining fresh. Floral nose with small black fruits and spices. A mouth with blackcurrant aromas, subtle tannins and a great length.
