Expressive and bursting with ripe, almost decaying cherry, floral, woodsy and spice flavors, this red is firm, verging on racy and long. Licorice and toasty oak spice catch up to the lingering, slightly chewy finish. Best from 2024 through 2045. 194 cases made, 10 cases imported.

Varietal

Pinot Noir

Regularly described as being the grape varietal responsible for producing the world's most romantic wines, Pinot Noir has long been associated with elegance and a broad range of flavors The name means 'black pine' in French, and this is due to the fact that the fruit of this particular varietal is especially dark in color, and hangs in a conical shape, like that of a pine cone. Despite being grown today in almost every wine producing country, Pinot Noir is a notoriously difficult grape variety to cultivate. This is because it is especially susceptible to various forms of mold and mildew, and thrives best in steady, cooler climates. However, the quality of the fruit has ensured that wineries and vintners have persevered with the varietal, and new technologies and methods have overcome many of the problems it presents. Alongside this, the wide popularity and enthusiasm for this grape has ensured it will remain a firm favorite amongst wine drinkers for many years to come.

Appellation

Cote De Beaune

The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

Burghound

91-94 A markedly floral and very pretty nose reflects a broad array of spice nuances on the earthy red and dark berry fruit aromas where a hint of the sauvage lurks in the background. The rich, powerful and muscular large-scaled flavors display excellent length on the balanced finish that is shaped by firm but fine-grained tannins. Despite the prominent structure, this should be approachable after 5-ish or so years.

Wine Advocate

Revisited from bottle, the 2018 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru wafts from the glass with notes of peonies and orange rind mingled with rich berry fruit and carnal hints of smoked meats and fresh leather that weren't apparent during élevage. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with powdery tannins, succulent acids and a generous core of fruit, it's a pretty, structurally elegant wine that's just a touch more aromatically rustic than I remember it.

Vinous Media

90-92 The 2018 Corton Clos du Roi Grand Cru contains 65% whole-bunch fruit. The well-defined nose features brambly black fruit, crushed stone/powdered gravel and light tobacco scents. The medium-bodied palate is linear, precise and elegant, delivering fine-grained tannins with moderate grip and a slightly conservative finish. I suspect this will ultimately turn out to be a well-crafted yet early-drinking Corton.
