The beautifully and unforgettable French region of Cote De Beaune has been revered throughout the centuries, and recognized as one of the key producer's of the world's finest white wines. The region is highly respected as an excellent producer of Chardonnay wines, and the Chardonnay grapes which grow there, on the southern slopes of the Cote d'Or, are packed full of the unique and powerful characteristics of this very special terroir. Interestingly, Cote De Beaune produces more red wine than white wine, despite its white wines being so famous. The red wines of Cote De Beaune are mainly made from Pinot Noir, but are relatively very light and fruity in their character, perfect for sipping on a warm, sunny day alongside a wide range of foods.

The 2017 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves is showing well from bottle, unfurling in the glass with aromas of strawberries, cherries and plums mingled with sweet soil tones and licorice. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, velvety and charming, with supple tannins and a pretty core of fruit.

A brooding nose reluctantly reveals notes of plum, violet and freshly turned earth. The very supple and delicious flavors are not especially concentrated though I do like the relatively fine texture and persistence. Even so, this will need to add depth to merit the top end of my projected range.

The 2017 Beaune Grèves ler Cru has a well-defined bouquet of red berry fruit, rose petal and light earthy tones. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, and slightly chalky and gritty in texture. Sharp acidity on the finish oddly lends a Chianti-like allure. This will need careful partnering at the dinner table, though I did note some improvement in the glass. Closure is Diam 30 Organic. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
