The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. I was able to taste multiple barrels of the 2014 Cote Rotie from Jean-Paul and it appears to be a fresher, more linear and classic Cote Rotie from this estate. The majority of the barrels offers deep, ruby/purple colors, textbook Cote Rotie aromas of olives, pepper, violets and raspberry fruits, and medium-bodied richness and depth with bright acidity. There's good concentration here, but the acid balance will be something to watch.
