The Rhone Valley of southern France is a particularly fascinating wine region, with a history that stretches back to at least six hundred BCE, when the ancient Greeks first began cultivating vines there. As its name indicates, the 2022 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Sables de la Crau is crafted entirely from Grenache Noir planted on the sandy soils of La Crau. Revealing a bouquet of coniferous forest, dark berries, garrigue and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, dense and balanced palate, it's fresh and enrobing with structured tannins that segue into a long, elegant finish. Partly destemmed and matured in used barrels, this is a stunning wine that could improve in the cellar.
