Nikos Doulofakis is a leading figure in Crete’s winemaking scene. Located in the heartland of wine production, the village of Dafnes near Heraklion, he farms 20ha of owned vineyards (a mix of both indigenous Cretan as well as a few international varieties) and also works with local growers. This 100% Vidiano is fermented initially in stainless steel and completed in barrels, then matures for five months in new and second-use barrels, 60% French oak and 40% acacia. Aspros Lagos means ‘White Hare’ and is the name of the vineyard, which lies at 350m. Lenka Sedlackova MW: Pretty floral aromatics, with the acacia wood elements perfectly enhancing the fruit characteristics. White peach and ripe nectarine, a hint of yuzu sorbet. Delicious. Ana Jackson MW: Honeyed spice, white peach, wet stone minerality. Persistent, with a ripe and balanced finish. Terry Kandylis: Behind a whiff of vanilla and spice oak comes an array of dried herbs, camomile, yellow apples and pears. Fresh lemon, kumquat and baking spices, with a salty, mineral length.
