Riesling grapes have been grown in and around central Europe for centuries, and over time, they became the lasting symbol of south Germany's ancient and proud wine culture. Whilst the reputation of German wines abroad has in the past been mixed, the Germans themselves take an enormous amount of pride in their wineries, and Riesling grapes have now spread around the globe, growing anywhere with the correct climate in which they can thrive. Riesling grape varietals generally require much cooler climatic conditions than many other white grapes, and they are generally considered to be a very 'terroir expressive' varietal, meaning that the features and characteristics of the terroir they are grown on comes across in the flavors and aromas in the bottle. It is this important feature which has allowed Riesling wines to be elevated into the category of 'fine' white wines, as the features of the top quality bottles are generally considered to be highly unique and offer much to interest wine enthusiasts.

As in many Old World countries, the rise of viticulture in Germany came about as a result of the Roman Empire, who saw the potential for vine cultivation in the vast flatlands around the base of the Rhine valley. Indeed, for over a thousand years, Germany's wine production levels were enormous, with much of the south of the country being used more or less exclusively for growing grapes. Over time, this diminished to make way for expanding cities and other types of industries, but Southern Germany remains very much an important wine region within Europe, with many beautifully balanced and flavorful German wines being prized by locals and international wine lovers alike. The hills around Baden-Baden and Mannheim are especially noteworthy, as these produce the high end of the characteristic semi-sweet white wines which couple so perfectly with German cheeses and pickled vegetables. However, all of Germany's wine producing regions have something special and unique to offer, and are a joy to explore and experience.

Pfalz

The beautiful German wine region of Pfalz is the second largest in the country, and a region recognized for its astonishing variety and the quality of its produce. With around 25,000 hectares of land in Pfalz under vine, the region produces an impressive amount of wine, considering the fact that the majority of wineries in the region are independent, small and traditionally run. The vineyards of Pfalz benefit enormously from their relatively warm, dry and sunny climate – exceedingly similar to that of nearby Alsace – and the high quality, mineral rich soils that typify the region. Although grapes have been cultivated in the Pfalz region since time immemorial, it was the Romans who first built up the wine region in the first century, introducing many grape varietals which can still be found growing there to this day.

#50 in Top 100 World, 2024. It is hard to imagine how a dry riesling, or a white wine of any kind, could be more focused and minerally than this great Pfalz masterpiece. There is a creamy element to this, but the herbs and nutty apple character are stronger. Supernaturally precise on the very concentrated yet only medium-bodied palate. The mineral energy at the super-long finish are off the scale, yet here, too, it is anything but forceful. From biodynamically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink from release.

The 2023 Pechstein G.C. opens with a deep, fresh, pure, elegant and lemony as well as flinty bouquet that needs a little while to open up. Full-bodied, refined and elegant on the palate, this is an intense, very complex and aromatic, super sustainable and finely tannic Pechstein with fennel seed flavors and rare calm and balance on the saline finish, which makes this an outstanding relaxed and very distinctive Riesling. 12.5% stated alcohol. Diam 30 cork. Tasted at the domaine in January 2025.
