Champagne Blend

The sparkling wines of Champagne have been revered by wine drinkers for hundreds of years, and even today they maintain their reputation for excellence of flavor and character, and are consistently associated with quality, decadence, and a cause for celebration. Their unique characteristics are partly due to the careful blending of a small number of selected grape varietals, most commonly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These grapes, blended in fairly equal quantities, give the wines of Champagne their wonderful flavors and aromas, with the Pinot Noir offering length and backbone, and the Chardonnay varietal giving its acidity and dry, biscuity nature. It isn't unusual to sometimes see Champagne labeled as 'blanc de blanc', meaning it is made using only Chardonnay varietal grapes, or 'blanc de noir', which is made solely with Pinot Noir.

Champagne

The beautiful rolling hillsides of the Champagne region of France have, for hundreds of years, been producing many of the world's most famous wines. The sparkling white wines to come out of Champagne's prestigious wineries have conquered the world, and are drank in celebration across the globe. The vast majority of the region is under vine, and grows predominantly Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grape varietals, which are usually blended together by master wine-makers in order to make their recognizable and widely loved produce. The north-easterly region of Champagne has a relatively cool climate, and quite a lot of rainfall, making it far from ideal for ripening grapes. However, the presence of heavily forested areas in the region helps maintain a balanced temperature, and the generations of expertise the wineries hold clearly produces excellent results in spite of the climatic problems.

#89 in Top 100 Wines of France, 2025. Stunning aromas of pie crust, lightly cooked apples and Asian pears. Full-bodied with lots of lovely rich fruit, spices and nuts. The finish is so intense, showing toasted bread and gorgeous salted butter, that it goes on for minutes. Seven years on the lees. Dosage 3 g/L. Drink now.

The NV Champagne V.P. stands for Vieille Prolongée, because it is aged longer, seeing 7 years on the lees before disgorgement. A blend 70% Pinot and the rest Chardonnay, based on 2016 and with reserve wine from 2015 and 2014, they made this blend in 2017. Offering wonderfully pure aromas of cherry liqueur, eau de vie, fresh flowers, and crushed rocks, it’s full-bodied on the palate and has broad shoulders but retains a very focused and well-defined feel, with outstanding concentration and purity, a fantastically long finish, and a remarkably youthful feel. It’s beautiful now but has the potential for a lot of longevity and is going to be wonderful to check in on.

The (2016) Extra Brut V.P. Grand Cru (Vieillissement Prolongé) is exquisite. A classic Egly-Ouriet Champagne, the 2016 release of the V.P. captures a gorgeous combination of texture built through long aging of 84 months on the lees with the vibrant style the house favors today. Dried pear, crushed flowers, mint, chamomile and light pastry notes all take shape with a bit of aeration. Time in the glass further amplifies the wine’s considerable textural presence. Dosage of 1 gram per liter works so well here. As always, the V.P. is a blend of Pinot Noir from sites in Ambonnay, Bouzy and Verzenay. Dosage is 1 gram per liter. Disgorged: July 2024.

As usual, the latest disgorgement of Egly's NV Extra-Brut Grand Cru V.P., this year based on the 2015 vintage complemented by reserve wines from 2014 and 2013, is one of the highlights of the range. Wafting from the glass with aromas of pear, green apple, freshly baked bread, crushed mint, honeycomb, white flowers and praline, it's medium to full-bodied, fleshy and layered, with a racy and concentrated core, a pretty pinpoint mousse and a long, saline finish.

A strikingly pretty and complex nose combines notes of toast, strong yeast, baked apple and soft citrus nuances. There is equally good complexity to the delicious and notably rich flavors that are supported by a vibrant effervescence while delivering very fine length on the sappy and very dry finish that avoids austerity. This is a really lovely effort that is drinking perfectly well now though one that should continue to hold. In a word, excellent.

This is the same as the Grand Cru bottling but with extended lees ageing and, in this case, three years post-disgorgement. The lees ageing brings a remarkable aromatic range and substance on the palate † almost mascarpone with peach tart, macadamia nuts and dried berries, certainly showing some evolution on cork now with a thread of toasted nut and dried spice on the close.

A round and well-balanced Champagne, with a fresh, lightly juicy frame of acidity and a creamy bead supporting flavors of white cherry, Marcona almond and lemon zest. A tangy hint of saline shows on the finish. Disgorged July 2018. Drink now through 2021.
