The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Bright licorice on the nose with red cherries and cherrystones, wild herbs and overall complexity. Full-bodied with juicy, integrated and long acidity, supple fruit and velvety tannins with a chalkier finish. Good structure for aging, but still enjoyable now.

The 2020 Brunello Di Montalcino has a medium red/orange-tinged color and is expressive on opening, offering aromas of baked strawberries, sweet spices, herbes de Provence, and tangerine. Medium-bodied, it has refreshing ripe acidity, ultra-fine tannins, and a silky texture through a very elegant finish. This lovely Brunello has fantastic immediate appeal and should drink well over the coming 6-8 years.

Winery Notes

Red with good depth and intensity. Rim, denoting aging, tends to terracotta in color, then garnet. Very intense fragrances, expanded by a reducing aging process which amplifies the hints of tobacco and lavender, typical of a prime Sangiovese. Soft and rich at the start with very good structure, generous and lingering, very persistent finish. Aromas are also fully expressed in the mouth with the presence of balanced wood exalting the aromatics of the variety.
