Sangiovese

The name of this grape, meaning 'blood of Jove' conjures up evocative images of long dead civilizations, and gives the Sangiovese varietal a sense of the holy, the sacred, the special. Indeed, this particular type of Italian grape has been cultivated and processed for thousands of years, and is said to be the original favorite grape varietal of the Romans, and the Etruscans before them. Throughout history, vintners have continued to plant this varietal, and they continue to produce wonderful wines to this day. The long bunches of very dark, round fruit are treasured by fine wineries in Italy and a few other places around the world, and when young, these grapes are lively â€“ full of strawberry flavors and a little spiciness. However, it is when they are aged in oak that they take on some truly special flavors and aromas, as seen in some of the finest wines of the Old World.

There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Brunello di Montalcino, an esteemed wine appellation in Tuscany, Italy, has been crafting exceptional red wines since its establishment in 1966. The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna Soccorso is darkly seductive with a rich blend of crushed plums, cedar shavings and cocoa lifted by mentholated herbs. This is round and supple with masses of ripe wild berry fruit and inner violet florals energized by brisk acidity. A wall of grippy tannins emerges through the finale, balanced by a staining of primary concentration as the Vigna Soccorso finishes structured and long. Patience will be required before this gentle giant shows its best.

• Entirely from the storied Soccorso vineyard next to eponymous medieval church La Madonna del Soccorso. • Enzo Tiezzi, eminence gris of Montalcino completely restored and renovated this vineyard starting in 1999. • Know to be the location of production for the very first wines from Montalcino labeled Brunello. • The label is a throwback to the original wines produced from this parcel in the 1800s which won awards in Marseilles and Bordeaux at the turn of the 20th century. • 530 meters above sea level, among the highest vineyards in the appellation. • Sandstone, Volcanic soils with silt, sand and clay. • The vines are “alberello” or bush-trained. • Spontaneous fermentation and maceration on the skins without temperature control for four weeks in upright, open-top oak fermenters. • The wine is aged just under four years in the traditional Slavonian-oak casks form 10-40 hectoliters.
