Opaque ruby. Spice-accented cherry, cassis, blueberry and licorice scents develop smoky mineral and floral top-notes that gain strength as the wine opens up. Fleshy black/blue fruit, licorice and candied violet flavors are supported by a spine of juicy acidity and become sweeter on the back half. Deftly blends concentration and vivacity and finishes smoky and very long, with gently chewy tannins and lingering dark fruit and candied licorice qualities. 51% new oak.

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Refreshing citrus and mint aromas at first, then blackcurrant, spice and nutmeg oak. Intriguing! The palate is equally refreshing on entry: full of minty, pure-fruited, dark berries and currants, then raisins and chocolate nibs. Maturation in French oak is apparent though in no way detracts from the fruit. It currently encases and frames but, in time, will resolve itself to become a part of the texture. The high alcohol serves to amplify the flavours rather than overheat the palate. There is real balance and elegance despite the dynamism and power of this wine. It deserves three to five more years in bottle to come into its own and will then live, large and loud, for at least another decade or more. Beautifully crafted.

This cuvée has shifted toward more Petite Sirah over the past few vintages, and the 2017 Ingenuity checks in as 56% Petite Sirah, 16% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah, and 13% Grenache. Blueberries, flowery incense, white pepper, and candied orange peel all give way to a sexy, ripe, full-bodied 2017 with sweet tannins and a great finish. Drink it over the coming decade.

Very dark aromas of espresso- spiked cassis meet with charred violets on the bold yet beautiful nose of this blend of 56% Petite Sirah, 16% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 13% Grenache. The 2017 Ingenuity is a blend of 56% Petite Sirah, 16% Mourvèdre, 15% Syrah and 13% Grenache from the Paderewski vineyard, aged 19 months in 51% new French oak barrels and puncheons. It has pretty aromas of violet, blueberries and blackberries with spicy touches. It's full-bodied but surprisingly fresh and ripe, offering pretty pops of blue fruits and finishing long and layered. 667 cases produced.

Winery Notes

Syrah leads this luscious blend of Grenache and Mourvèdre to play nicely with its signature dash of Petite Sirah. Though the majority of its fruit comes from both Paderewski and Catapult Vineyards, the Petite Sirah hails solely from one west-facing limestone area on our Paderewski Vineyard.
