Deep violet. Intensely perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, cherry liqueur, licorice and exotic spices are complemented by a suave floral overtone. Sappy cherry-vanilla, cassis and blueberry flavors stain the palate and become spicier with air. Finishes smooth and exceptionally long and precise, with resonating spiciness and polished tannins that add gentle final grip.

Country

United States

Of all the New World wine countries, perhaps the one which has demonstrated the most flair for producing high quality wines - using a combination of traditional and forward-thinking contemporary methods - has been the United States of America. For the past couple of centuries, the United States has set about transforming much of its suitable land into vast vineyards, capable of supporting a wide variety of world-class grape varietals which thrive on both the Atlantic and the Pacific coastlines. Of course, we immediately think of sun-drenched California in regards to American wines, with its enormous vineyards responsible for the New World's finest examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot based wines, but many other states have taken to viticulture in a big way, with impressive results. Oregon, Washington State and New York have all developed sophisticated and technologically advanced wine cultures of their own, and the output of U.S wineries is increasing each year as more and more people are converted to their produce.

Region

California

California as a wine producing region has grown in size and importance considerably over the past couple of centuries, and today is the proud producer of more than ninety percent of the United States' wines. Indeed, if California was a country, it would be the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, with a vast range of vineyards covering almost half a million acres. The secret to California's success as a wine region has a lot to do with the high quality of its soils, and the fact that it has an extensive Pacific coastline which perfectly tempers the blazing sunshine it experiences all year round. The winds coming off the ocean cool the vines, and the natural valleys and mountainsides which make up most of the state's wine regions make for ideal areas in which to cultivate a variety of high quality grapes.

Based on 47% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache, and 19% Syrah, the 2017 Veracity is beautifully done, revealing a core of blue fruits, plenty of peppery herbs, violets, spice, and floral notes, medium to full body, and a great finish. It's one of those wines that grows on you with time in the glass, and I suspect it will be even better with another 2-3 years of bottle age (although it's terrific today).

Wine Enthusiast

Quite dark in the glass, this blend of 47% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache and 19% Syrah offers seared plum, purple flower and richly layered spice aromas on the nose. The palate is a lesson in cohesion, with well-integrated waves of boysenberry, black cherry, purple flowers and licorice, framed by polished tannins and fresh acidity.

Wine Advocate

The 2017 Veracity is a blend of 47% Mourvèdre, 34% Grenache and 19% Syrah aged 18 months in 26% new French oak. It has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and is youthfully reluctant on the nose. With time, it reveals aromas of blackcurrant, milk chocolate, fresh blueberries, redcurrants, blood orange and desiccated roses with notes of pink peppercorn and salumi. The palate is medium to full-bodied, silky and gaining in amplitude, opening to red, blue and black fruits with oodles of floral perfume. It has a firm, grainy frame and mind-bending juiciness to lift the long, layered finish. Give this at least another 2-3 years in bottle. 870 cases produced.

Grilled meat, rosemary and thyme aromas then firm, polished, savoury and intense flavours. Tannins are tightly woven, acidity is firm and there is a real stoniness to this wine. Showing brooding charm, it needs time to unwind and uncoil but there’s no doubting its compact complexity of flavours that encompass both red stone fruit as well as meat, black olive and pepper. The finish is long and entirely savoury.

WS 91pts

Wine Spectator

Densely structured but expressive, with black currant and cherry flavors that are laced with grilled garrigue, cured meat and licorice, building toward broad-shouldered tannins. Mourvedre, Grenache and Syrah. Best from 2022 through 2029. 870 cases made.

Winery Notes

Our nod to Châteauneuf-du-Pape, this Grenache-based blend embraces its status as a GSM (Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre) with elegance, panache, and a consistent sunny-ness that reminds Owner, Bill Armstrong, of the wines from the Southern Rhone – wines that inspired him to start this crazy Epoch journey in the first place.
