There are few countries in the world with a viticultural history as long or as illustrious as that claimed by Italy. Grapes were first being grown and cultivated on Italian soil several thousand years ago by the Greeks and the Pheonicians, who named Italy 'Oenotria' – the land of wines – so impressed were they with the climate and the suitability of the soil for wine production. Of course, it was the rise of the Roman Empire which had the most lasting influence on wine production in Italy, and their influence can still be felt today, as much of the riches of the empire came about through their enthusiasm for producing wines and exporting it to neighbouring countries. Since those times, a vast amount of Italian land has remained primarily for vine cultivation, and thousands of wineries can be found throughout the entire length and breadth of this beautiful country, drenched in Mediterranean sunshine and benefiting from the excellent fertile soils found there. Shaped by the hot conditions of the vintage, the wine reveals generous fruit and broad volume that wraps thickly across the palate. While the 2022 delivers notable richness and softness, the estate’s restrained handling keeps the profile balanced rather than heavy. Produced in 10,000 bottles, this exuberant expression is best enjoyed in the near to medium term, when its sweet fruit character is at its most appealing.

Ripe and expressive, this red delivers juicy black cherry, black currant, violet and mineral flavors on an elegant frame. Though this is approachable now, it’s okay if a bottle gets lost in the cellar for a few years. Excellent aftertaste. Merlot and Syrah. Drink now through 2038. 650 cases made, 120 cases imported.

The 2022 Le Gonnare pours a garnet red color and is expressive in its aromas of baked red plum, spice, fruitcake, and toasted incense, though it remains balanced and not overly dried. In 2022 the blend shifted, and while it remains Merlot-based, the Syrah has been replaced with Cabernet Sauvignon to fill out the remainder of the wine. (The Syrah is now being utilized in the Le Pievi.) Full-bodied, it offers fresh red fruit, dusty earth, and ripe tannins with good definition. It’s already drinking well and should continue to hold nicely over the coming 8-10 years. Drink 2026-2036.
